The total population in Guangxi by the end of 2007 was more than 50 million, one-third are of the Zhuang ethnic minority.

ATHENS, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great attention to the cross-border cooperation and is willing to work together with the international communities to strengthen its effort in the fight against corruption, Teng Jiuming, head of the Chinese delegation, said at the 13th International Anti-Corruption Conference here on Sunday.     Teng, senior ombudsman from the Ministry of Supervision of China, said that corruption is a common challenge faced by all countries around the world.     "For years we have been carrying out international exchange and cooperation in the anti-corruption field based on the principles of equality, mutual benefit, of respect for differences, and of emphasis on effectiveness."     Teng pointed out that the Chinese government is ready to enhance its anti-corruption efforts together with other countries, regions and international organizations, so as to create a just and harmonious world.     The Chinese delegation also introduced China's anti-corruption strategies and practices in recent years at the conference.     According to the requirement of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), the National Bureau of Corruption Prevention was established under the Central Chinese Government, which is the first corruption prevention organ at the national level since the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Teng said on 13th, May 2008, the Chinese government published the Five-year Work Plan (2008-2012 ) on building and Completing the System for Punishing and Preventing Corruption.     China has also tabled the Anti-Money Laundering Law and the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Disclosure of Government Information in recent years.     Business bribery is a common challenge faced by the international community. TAIPEI, Nov. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese mainland's chief negotiator on Taiwan affairs Chen Yunlin said Thursday that complicated historical problems across the Taiwan Strait could well be resolved through mutual trust.     Chen, president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS), told a banquet, held in the island's landmark Grand Hotel, that problems could be settled as long as the two sides made concerted efforts with "kindness and wisdom" to create conditions and firstly solve economic and livelihood problems closely linked with public interests.     Chen was grateful for the considerate arrangement and warm and friendly service on the part of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) over the past four days.     He was on a five-day visit to the island starting Monday for economic talks with the SEF, which was the first meeting held in the island between the ARATS and the SEF. GUANGZHOU, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese exporters, faced with dwindling foreign orders amid global economic slowdown, are diverting their attention to domestic markets.     At the ongoing Canton Fair, China's leading trade fair, businesses that canvass foreign buyers are also focusing on the local market as their customers in the Western nations are dragged into recession by the global credit crisis.     Qiao Guan, board chairman of the Jiangsu Hotwind Sauna Equipment, said his company is planning to divert some of the business from abroad to the domestic market.     The company's sales in the United States, which accounted for about 30 percent of its total exports, had dropped by more than 20 percent this year, Qiao said.     He hoped the local sales could compensate the decreasing orders in the foreign market. "We have completed research on the domestic market, which shows some exported goods are affordable and have good sales prospects in the local market," he said.     The Himin Solar Energy Group, based in east China's Shandong Province, produces solar water heaters that are sold both at home and abroad. Xue Xinwen, head of the firm's international trade department, said the company had been losing orders as some Western countries canceled subsidies on environment-friendly imports.     "We have sent more staff to market our products to local infrastructure authorities and companies," he said.     "Domestic consumption has been greatly boosted by a robustly growing economy, creating positive situations for exporters to go local," he said.     But the readjustment can be difficult.     Li Jianlan, a worker with Wanji Plumbing Materials Co. Ltd, based in Ningbo, said an exclusive exporter like her company lacked channels and brand loyalty in the domestic market. "These are two different kinds of markets, and it takes a lot of work to be familiar with the ways business is done with local buyers," she said.     Some goods that are made for export are deemed too expensive for Chinese buyers.     Huang Yan, general manager of the L-bright Export Manufacture Corporation, said it had been very difficult to sell its products to domestic buyers as they lacked a price advantage.     Local governments, aware of the trend, are taking action to encourage the conversions. Guangdong Province, the country's major exporting base, issued a notice in June, ordering local quality inspection authorities to provide needed technical assistance to exporters.

BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China held a reception here on Friday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the China-Japan Peace and Friendship Treaty signing, calling on both nations to make joint efforts to further boost bilateral relations.     President Hu Jintao and visiting Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso attended the reception.     Recalling the history of the Sino-Japanese relations, Hu said 30 years ago senior leaders, including late leader Deng Xiaoping and ex-Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda, made a strategic decision to sign the treaty.     He called it an important historic document in bilateral ties since the normalization of relations in 1972.     Hu said the treaty had for the first time nailed down the general direction of bilateral ties featuring peaceful co-existence and long-term friendship. He added it had played an important role in pushing forward the ties in a correct fashion.     Since then, peace, friendship and cooperation remained in the mainstream of the relation despite some twists and turns, he said.     The four political documents signed between the two countries had laid a political foundation for the long term stable development of bilateral ties, Hu said, adding both sides had made hard-won progress in cooperation in various areas.     After the normalization of the ties, the political and economic exchanges between the two nations had developed quickly.     On Oct. 23, 1978, China and Japan exchanged documents of ratification of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship during the visit of the then Chinese Vice Premier Deng to Japan. This had become one of the four important political documents (the other three are the joint statement in 1972, the joint declaration in 1998 and the joint statement in May) for the ties.     Hu thanks all those who had contributed to cementing the China-Japan friendship, adding insightful officials of two countries, including the seven Japan-China friendship institutions, had made great efforts to push forward bilateral friendship, despite the variety of domestic and international situations.     The Sino-Japanese relations were at a new starting point to create history and faced important opportunities for further development.     "We are willing to work with the Japanese side to increase political mutual trust, intensify cooperation and friendly exchanges to advance China-Japan strategic and reciprocal relations," Hu noted.     Aso highlighted the bilateral exchanges and cooperation of the past 30 years, attributing the development of the relation to people who were working hard to push forward the ties.     China and Japan are permanent neighbors, and the relations between the two should be in the nature of indispensable partnership. Aso called on the two countries to continue their dialogue and exchanges at various levels and cement consultation and cooperation in aim to achieve joint development and help to promote the stability and prosperity of Asia and the world.     Aso arrived in China on Thursday evening to attend the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting. It was his first visit since taking office last month.

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China urged Sudan here on Tuesday to take substantial and effective measures to ensure the safety of Chinese personnel after four Chinese workers were kidnapped and killed.     "It is one of the most serious killing cases of oversea Chinese workers in recent years and we are very shocked by it," Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said via a phone conversation with his Sudanese counterpart Deng Alor.     "The Chinese side feels strong indignation and condemns the inhumane terrorist act by the kidnappers on unarmed Chinese company staff, " Yang told Alor, according to a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Tuesday evening.     Sudanese officials earlier reported to the Chinese Embassy in Sudan that five of the nine kidnapped workers were killed on Monday, with two rescued and two missing. It revised the numbers late Tuesday afternoon, saying four were killed, four were rescued and the other was still missing, according to the Foreign Ministry.     The nine workers from the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) were kidnapped from an oil field near the western Sudanese region of Darfur on Oct. 18.     The Chinese Embassy said they were taken by unknown militants in the Southern Kordofan State, but no armed group had claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.     "The Chinese leaders and Chinese government are highly concerned about the case, asking for the utmost rescue efforts with the precondition of ensuring the safety of the kidnapped," Yang, who is among the entourage of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to Russia, added.     "We hope the Sudanese side will continue its rescue effort, bring the murderers to severe punishment, and take all substantial and effective measures to prevent similar things happening again," Yang said.     Alor expressed his condolences to the victims and his sympathy to the victims' families as well as the Chinese government and Chinese people, promising that the Sudanese government would continue its rescue mission for the missing Chinese worker, make the utmost efforts to bring the murderers to justice and protect the safety of Chinese people in Sudan, according to the statement.

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government is actively promoting the relief of tension in Gaza, and China is ready to work with the international community to bring all the parties concerned back to the negotiation table at an early date in a bid to achieve the peaceful, just and durable settlement to the Palestinian-Israeli issue, a Chinese envoy said here Tuesday.     Zhang Yesui, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, made the statement as he was speaking at the closed-door meeting of the UN Security Council on the Gaza conflict, which has left more than 900 Palestinians killed and 4,000 others injured.     Zhang told the Security Council that the Chinese special envoy on the Middle East issue, Sun Bigan, began his visit to Egypt, Israel and Palestine on Sunday for mediation for peace in the region.     China is gravely concerned about the growing escalation of tension in Gaza, and it is regrettable to see that the new Security Council resolution, adopted last Thursday to call for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, went unheeded by warring parties, he said.     At present, the top priority is to achieve the full implementation of the UN truce resolution -- the immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, a halt to the firing of rockets into Israel by the armed Palestinian faction, and unimpeded access of Gaza to the humanitarian relief goods, he said.     At the Tuesday council meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon briefed 15 council members on his upcoming visit to the Middle East, which will take him to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait.

TAIPEI, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- The panda pair given by the Chinese mainland to Taiwan made their debut at the Taipei Zoo Saturday evening, meeting a select group of visitors including Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou and Kuomintang Honorary Chairman Lien Chan.     "It's an honor for Taiwan to breed the two pandas, as there are only about 1,600 pandas in the world," said Ma, at the ceremony to inaugurate the new enclosure for the pandas.     About 500 orphans and children from poor families were invited by the city government to be the first visitors to the panda pair.     "It's a time for family reunions at Spring Festival, but some children have lost their families and others cannot afford to go to the zoo.
