KUNMING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Yunnan section of the Sino-Vietnam land boundary demarcation project has ended with 665 boundary tablets erected, an official with the foreign affairs office of southwest China's Yunnan Province said here on Saturday.     During the past eight years, six Chinese teams cooperated with their Vietnamese counterparts and demarcated the borders of Jiangcheng, Jinping, Hekou, Maguan, Malipo and Funing.     All the land border demarcation work in the Yunnan area was completed on Dec. 20, in accordance with the "Vietnam-China Land Border Treaty."     Large boundary tablets were established on Hekou's roads, rail terminal and harbor along the Yunnan section of the border.     The completion of the task represents a major step in Sino-Vietnamese relations.     China and Vietnam exchanged views on Wednesday on solving the remaining issues connected to border demarcation and erecting border markers, reached an agreement and issued a joint statement.

    BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- The National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, heard here on Wednesday a series of reports including the implementation of the 11th five-year plan and the impact of the world financial crisis.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, attended the conference.     Zhang Ping, minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), delivered a report on how the Chinese government has implemented the Outline of the 11th Five-Year Program for National Economic and Social Development (2006-2010). The Second plenary session of the sixth session of the 11th Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress is held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, on Dec. 24, 2008.    The implementation has been going well, with most of the goals being reached as scheduled at the middle stage, he said.     He urged more attention to be paid on expanding domestic demand, increasing innovative ability, continuing reforms on resource prices and taxes, energy saving and emission reduction, as well as increasing the government's ability to provide public services.     Zhang also gave a report on how the intensifying impact of the world financial and economic crisis is reverberating through China's economy.     Other reports included efforts to stabilize prices and prevent price hikes addressed by NDRC vice head Zhang Mao, as well as water pollution prevention and control by Environmental Protection Minister Zhou Shengxian.

Lhasa, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Four media organizations from China's neighboring countries will be invited for the first time to cover the annual session of the People's Congress of the Tibet Autonomous Region to be held on Jan. 14.     The plenary session of the Regional Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference to be held on Jan. 12 will also be open to foreign press.     According to a press conference held by the two sessions on late Saturday, the invitations to the four foreign media were an effort to "let the world know better about a real and new Tibet through an objective visual angle."     Names of the foreign media organizations were not specified.     Tibet authorities also revealed that they will invite diplomats with Nepal's consulate general to Lhasa, capital of the autonomous region, to attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the sessions.     There will be nearly 200 journalists from 16 media organizations home and abroad to report the annual sessions this year, the press conference was told.     At the two sessions, report on the work of the regional government will be discussed, as well as local budgets and plans for social and economic developments.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese leader has urged Shanghai, the country's major economic hub, to use the global financial crisis as a driving force to pursue economic restructuring. BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The State Council, or Cabinet, agreed in an executive meeting on Wednesday to speed up the reform and development of the inland Chongqing municipality.     China has four municipalities: Beijing, Tianjin in the north, Shanghai in the east, and Chongqing in the southwest.     "Local authorities are required to accelerate the overall development of rural and urban areas and promote environmental protection and natural resources conservation, to turn Chongqing into an important growth pole in western region," according to the meeting, presided over by Premier Wen Jiabao.     Local governments should help people in the Three Gorges area to develop local pillar industries, modern agriculture and improve rural production and living conditions, according to the meeting.     The city should also step up construction of a new district in its north and a newly-approved bonded zone and carry out regional economic cooperation.

BEIJING, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China's economy was on sound track but prospects were complicated by the world economic slowdown, said Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of China's central bank, on Sunday.     In a report Zhou made to the fifth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), he said the country's economy was developing as expected, but the world economic slowdown added uncertainties to its prospect.     "Our economy is highly reliant on overseas demand. Slacking exports resulted from the global economic slowdown would have a negative impact on the economy," he said.     He suggested the country need to be cautious in adjusting policies because there are both possibilities of cost-driven price rises and possibilities of continuous price falls in the future.     "Currently, inflation pressure mainly comes from rising cost," he said.     He said in the world, more and more economies began to shift their policies from curbing inflation to boosting economic developments amid a world economic recession. The international commodity price is expected to enter a new round of rise.     According to him, the PBOC will adopt flexible and prudent macro-control policies to strive for the stability of the country's financial sectors and promote sound and rapid economic growth.     Zhou said efforts would go to other specific fields, including establishing financial risk monitoring mechanism, enhancing cooperation among domestic and overseas financial organs, and ensuring liquidity in the banking system.     He also urged strengthening foreign exchange management through enhancing cross-border capital flow management and supervision, in a bid to avoid losses and risk caused by speculation activities.     The central bank would keep a close look over the real estate sector and improve financial services in this sector, he added.     Zhou said that the impact of the world financial crisis on China's economy cannot be underestimated. However, the country's economic situation is sound as a whole, and is capable to effectively resist the external impact.     China's financial sectors have grown stronger after years of development. The profit-earning and risk-resistance abilities have been greatly improved, market liquidity is sufficient, and the financial system is sound and safe, he explained.     The fifth session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) opened its second plenary meeting Sunday morning. BRUSSELS, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- China and the European Union (EU) on Friday agreed to strengthen practical cooperation in jointly addressing the current global financial crisis.     The agreement came after talks between visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao, who arrived here on Thursday for a visit to the EU headquarters, and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.     Wen told Barroso that China, in its foreign relations, lays a strategic emphasis on developing the comprehensive strategic partnership with the EU, and promoting cooperation to jointly tide over the current difficulties should be a key task for both sides under current circumstances.     To this end, both sides need to trust and respect each other, treat each other equally and aim for mutual benefit, Wen said. In particular, China and the EU should address each other's major concerns and try to stave off disputes, he added.     Barroso said the EU and China have seen close, deep and fruitful relations, and, as two major forces in the world, many global issues cannot be solved without EU-China cooperation.     The EU is ready to promote dialogue and cooperation with China to elevate the comprehensive strategic partnership to a higher level, he said.     To jointly tackle the global financial crisis, China and the EU agreed to expand information exchanges between financial institutions, the central banks and financial supervisory and regulatory bodies.     Both sides pledged to promote trade and investment. China will continue to steadily expand market access and increase import from the EU, while the EU recognized China's achievement in promoting market economy.     Both sides agreed to support cooperation between small- and medium-sized businesses and to deepen cooperation in technological innovation in such areas as energy conservation, greenhouse gas emission reduction and health care.     China and the EU vowed to work together in mitigating and adapting to climate change, agreeing to boost cooperation in developing new energies, new energy conservation technology and a low-carbon economy.     The two sides also reached consensus on close coordination in macroeconomic policies and opposition to trade protectionism.     China and the EU on Friday signed cooperation agreements on aviation, work safety, clean energy and intellectual property rights protection.
