CAIRO, March 3 (Xinhua) -- The commander-in-chief of Egyptian armed forces met Wednesday in Cairo with visiting Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Ma Xiaotian, pledging to strengthen bilateral military ties.Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, who is also Egyptian Minister of Defense, said during the meeting that the two countries have seen close cooperation in military, political and economic fields in recent years, which serves both countries' interests as well as regional and world peace and stability."The Egyptian military attaches great importance to the friendly relationship with the Chinese counterpart and expects more efforts to be made to further improve pragmatic cooperation," Tantawi said.For his part, Ma said the two sides enjoy long-term friendly relationship, and fruitful cooperation has been accomplished in the fields of high-level visits and professional personnel training."The Chinese side is willing to make joint efforts with the Egyptian side to consolidate the traditional friendship and push forward the in-depth cooperation between the two militaries," Ma said.Ma arrived in Cairo on Tuesday. During his visit, he also presided over the first session of the Chinese-Egyptian Defense Cooperation Commission.

BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- China and Vietnam held a reception in Beijing on Friday to mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties.     Chen Haosu, president of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, said China and Vietnam were friendly neighbors, which had frequent high-level visits, broad trade and economic cooperation, and cultural exchanges.     Chen said the establishment of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area (FTA) on Jan. 1, 2010 will further boost the mutually-beneficial cooperation between China and Vietnam. BEIJING, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao Friday called for the mainland and Taiwan to enhance mutual political trust and strengthen the political foundation for a peaceful relationship.The mainland and Taiwan should uphold the principle that the two sides belong to one and the same China, Wen said in the government work report at the annual session of the National People's Congress, the top legislature.Wen hailed the progress made in mainland-Taiwan relations during the past year, saying that continuous improvement has brought real benefits to the people.Ties across the Taiwan Strait have warmed up in recent years, with the realization of direct air and sea transport links and postal services.The two sides are also negotiating about an economic pact, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), which aims at normalizing trade and investment links.Wen said in the report that a unique economic cooperation mechanism would be established through negotiating and signing the ECFA.In an online chat with Internet users on Saturday, Wen said the mainland is willing to make concessions when negotiating."The reason is very simple: Taiwan compatriots are our brothers," he said.

BEIJING, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- A total of 53.36 million Mu (about 3.56 million hectares) of crops in China had been affected by severe drought by Saturday, said the Office of State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters. The drought, mostly in China's southwestern provinces including Yunnan and Guizhou, had damaged crops and caused water shortage to both people and livestock.In Yunnan, the worst drought-stricken province, up to 31.48 million Mu of crops had been affected, with 11.53 million Mu seriously damaged and 6.16 million Mu destroyed. DHAKA, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh attaches great importance to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's upcoming visit to China, Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said here on Sunday."We attach great importance to prime minister's visit to China as Bangladesh and China are trusted friends. URUMQI, March 1 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-two women and children in China's far-western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were rescued on Sunday, one week after they were trapped by avalanches, the region's disaster response authorities said.Bad weather hindered rescue efforts Saturday, but on Sunday two military helicopters managed to take off and reach a coal mining area in Nilka County, Kazak Autonomous Prefecture of Ili, where 135 people were trapped.The helicopters brought the women and children to safe areas, while the rest were left with enough food, vegetables and medicines. They will wait until the road is reopened.Rescuers also airdropped food and medicine for 29 people trapped in an iron mining area in Nilka County.
