BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The output value of China's energy saving and environmental protection industry would hit 2.8 trillion yuan (412 billion U.S. dollars) by 2012, said Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission on Sunday.     Those sectors have become a new economic growth point and have bright prospects in China, Xie said at the fourth China-Japan Energy-saving and Environment Protection Forum which began Sunday.     He said the government will beef up investment in the construction of resource recycling projects, which will directly boost the industry development.     He noted the government will further reform the pricing system of the resource products.     Enterprises should also enhance innovation to break technological bottleneck notably in the development of clean coal transfer technology and pollutants treatment facilities.     China has been pushing for a national energy saving campaign to address the worsening conflicts between economic growth and environmental deterioration.

BARCELONA, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- The top Chinese negotiator for the United Nations climate change talks being held here said Tuesday that the Kyoto Protocol must be followed.     "China's position is quite clear: the Kyoto Protocol must be adhered to, since it best illustrates the principal of 'common but differentiated' responsibilities," said Su Wei, head of the Chinese delegation to the talks.     Su told Xinhua that during earlier negotiations, some countries had proposed discarding the Kyoto Protocol and adopting a totally new document at December's Copenhagen climate change meeting.     "This demand is strongly rejected by the Group of 77 and China, and other developing countries," Su said.     Su stressed that the Kyoto Protocol must be the legal basis for further negotiations at Copenhagen, and developed countries must fulfill their obligations under the protocol, which regulates that they should clarify their reduction targets in the second phase of the protocol.     "If this basic arrangement is changed, the future of the Copenhagen meeting would be greatly shadowed," Su said.     The deal to be reached at the Copenhagen conference, Su said, should have two basic elements.     One element is to set the mid-term emission reduction targets for developed countries under the Kyoto Protocol. That is, developed countries as a whole should commit to making 25-40 percent cuts below 1990 levels by 2020.     The second element is to make substantial arrangements for the implementation of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in accordance with the Bali Roadmap.     "We hope we could lay a good foundation for the Copenhagen conference through negotiations at this meeting," Su said.

HARBIN, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao conveyed new year greetings to workers, farmers, local residents and officials during his visit to northeastern Heilongjiang Province on the first two days of the year.     Braving the freezing weather, Wen visited the cities of Daqing and Qiqihar in Heilongjiang. BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Monday called for more peace efforts from Israel and Palestinians toward a two-state solution.     Wen made the appeal on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.     In a congratulatory message to this year's UN activities to observe this day, Wen said the Palestinian issue is at the core of the Middle East issue.     "China firmly supports the demands of Palestinian people for the restoration of their legitimate national rights and for the establishment of an independent state," said Wen.     The Middle East Peace process is at a crossroads. China hopes that Israel and Palestinians could guide the peace talks toward a desired direction and work for a two-state solution in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and the "land-for-peace" principle, he said.     An early resolution of the Palestinian issue in a comprehensive, just and permanent manner is not only beneficial to the Palestinian people, but also conducive to peace and stability in the whole Middle East region, said Wen.     As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, said Wen, China remains committed to the Mideast peace process and is willing to play a constructive role, together with the international community, in promoting peace, stability and development in the Middle East.

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday voiced its strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to an EU statement which denounced the execution of two Tibetans convicted of murder in last year's Lhasa riot.     The Swedish EU presidency released a statement Thursday, denouncing the recent death penalty handed down to two Tibetans involved in the Lhasa riot and asking China to abolish the capital sentences.     "We are strongly dissatisfied with and firmly oppose the EU statement," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu said in a news release.     The Lhasa violence involving beating, smashing, looting and burning in 2008 was a sabotage activity "premeditated, organized and masterminded" by the ** Lama group, who instigated Tibetan separatists in and out of China to fuel up the incident, Ma said.     China's legal institutions have carried out fair and open trials and brought only the culprits of the criminal activities to justice, he said. "This was China's internal affair and judicial sovereignty which allows no other country to interfere with."     China asks the EU to abide by the principles of equality and mutual respect and not to send any misleading signals to Tibetan separatists, so as to ensure sound and stable development of EU-China relations, Ma said.
