BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Internet researchers from China and Britain agreed at a forum in Beijing Thursday to enhance cooperation on maintaining a safe Internet environment for children.     The second China-U.K. Internet Roundtable-conference was held from Wednesday to Thursday.     The participants of the conference believed that the two governments and Internet enterprises from the two countries should work together to deal with the challenges brought about by online dangers to children.     They agreed it was necessary to strengthen the protection of young netizens from unhealthy information online, such as pornographic material or exposure to online predators.     Malcolm Hutty, head of public affairs of London Internet Exchange Ltd. said that there should be a "partnership approach" between government, parents and children's organizations responsible for advancing the rights for children.     Hutty said the government should create new protective laws.     "There is a big role for Internet industry ... in raising the awareness and providing ... educational messages about how to protect children," Hutty said, adding that there were responsibilities around ensuring that services aimed at children were made safe for them, particularly in chatrooms and social networking.     Susan Daley of Symantec suggested teaching children good cyber-skills in schools.     Hu Qiheng, chairwoman of the Internet Society of China (ISC), said that it was the responsibility of the government, parents and schools to safeguard the rights of young netizens.     Internet enterprises should also provide technological support to parents in installing protective software, she said.     According to the China Internet Network Information Center, by the end of 2008, about 108 million Chinese Internet users were under 19 years old.

JINAN, East China, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge who was invited to attend the 11th Chinese National Games on Friday.     Hu Jintao extended welcome to Rogge and offered his congratulation on Rogge's re-election as IOC President. HAIKOU, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers have recovered the bodies of three victims in a boat capsizing incident after tropical storm Parma landed in south China's Hainan Province Monday.     Strong winds and waves triggered by Parma caused a fishing boat to capsize and sink off the coast of Wanning City Monday morning, and all nine fishermen aboard the vessel fell into water, a spokesman with the Hainan Provincial Emergency Response Office said.     By 5 p.m., one body had been retrieved and five people had been rescued. At about 8 p.m., the bodies of two more victims were found, according to the maritime bureau of Hainan. BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- China attaches great importance to U.S. President Barack Obama's visit in November, a senior Chinese official told visiting U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg in Beijing Tuesday.     State Councilor Dai Bingguo said China would work with the U.S. to ensure the success of this visit.     Steinberg, who arrived in China Monday, said President Obama was looking forward to his visit, and hoped it would promote U.S.-China relations.     Dai said relations between the two countries had developed vigorously with close exchanges and cooperation since the Obama administration took office.     The two sides should work together for the continuous and steady development of bilateral ties, Dai said.     A key mission of Steinberg's China trip is to prepare for Obama's visit. It is part of the senior U.S. diplomat's week-long tour of Asia, which also takes him to Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and Tokyo.     He said Obama considered his meeting with President Hu Jintao in New York last week had given an impetus to bilateral ties.     Obama's visit would "mark an important milestone in building mutual trust and respect between the people of China and the United States," said a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing late Tuesday on his departure from China.     In a separate meeting with Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, Steinberg reiterated that the United States would continue with the one-China policy and respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, which were considered by the U.S. government the crucial principle in handling bilateral ties.     After expounding China's stance on Taiwan and issues concerning Tibet and Xinjiang, Xi said respect and care for each side's core interests and major concerns was the key to the healthy and steady growth of ties.     Xi called on the U.S. side to handle concerned issues in a "prudent" and "appropriate" way, to safeguard China-U.S. relations.     Steinberg said President Obama had several times stressed the great importance of U.S.-China relations since he took office in January.     The United States hoped to reveal to the world through President Obama's China visit that the two countries were willing to jointly respond to global challenges, including the global financial crisis, terrorism and non-proliferation, he said.     Xi called on joint efforts from both countries to ensure "positive results" from Obama's China tour.     "President Hu Jintao had successful meeting with President Obama in New York last week, in which they reached new important consensus on promoting active, all-round development of bilateral ties," said Xi.     "China is ready to work closely with the United States to implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, enhance strategic trust and substantial cooperation in various areas, and properly handle differences and sensitive issues," Xi said. 

CHENGDU, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- All the nine people missing in mudslides caused by heavy rains in southwest China's Sichuan Province were dead as the last two bodies were recovered over the weekend, the provincial government said late Sunday.     Rocks and mud buried a residential quarter of Sinohydro Bureau 10, a hydropower engineering and construction company in Jinyang County, early Friday, leaving nine workers missing. BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday urged more efforts to push forward the rejuvenation of the country's northeast and other traditional industrial bases.     Great progress has been made in the regions since China launched the rejuvenation move more than five years ago, said attendees at a meeting of the leading group of the State Council, the Cabinet, for revitalizing the northeast and other old industrial bases. The rejuvenation strategy of old industrial bases mainly covers regions including Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces and the northeastern parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has made clear Thursday that it will continue its proactive fiscal policy in the second half of this year to maintain its economic growth as government leaders reiterated the stance, for there are still uncertainties ahead.     Finance Minister Xie Xuren told local financial bureaus at a conference in Beijing on Thursday that the proactive policies, which included increased investment from the government, tax cuts and subsidies to low- income families, had taken effect in stimulating the recovery of the national economy.     The Chinese economy expanded 7.9 percent from a year ago in the second quarter of this year, driven by a surge of fixed-asset investment backed by government fiscal policies. The central government promised a 1.18trillion yuan investment.     By the end of June, 591.5 billion yuan (86.6 billion U.S. dollars) out of the total investment from the central government had been allocated, which boosted a 33.5 percent jump of fixed-asset investment in the first half of this year. It was the highest level in the last five years.     The ministry's decision came as Chinese leaders vowed to continue the current policies.     Chinese President Hu Jintao said Thursday that China should adhere to its proactive fiscal policy and moderately easy monetary policy to ensure a stable economic growth as the recovery is not yet solid.     Premier Wen Jiabao has reiterated that the economy is in a crucial phase and rebounding. He pledged to maintain the current macroeconomic policies and fully implement its four-trillion yuan stimulus package.     Xie said the government will implement the fiscal policy "at full swing" in the second half of this year and speed up allocation of investment from government, which, Xie hoped, would stimulate private investment.     Yang Zhiyong, researcher of the Institute of Finance and Trade Economics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a government think tank, said that currently the proactive fiscal policy had a limited impact on pushing up private investment. It is hard for private investment to enter monopolistic sectors, he added.     Li Yining, an economist from the Peking University, said consumption should be spurred to fuel the growth momentum in the future as the current economic recovery was advanced mainly by investment. He suggested the proactive policy be further carried out to stimulate consumption and private investment in the following period.     Xie said in the second half the ministry will continue its policy of tax cuts to increase investment from enterprises and consumption.     The ministry also pledged to increase spending on people's livelihood. Investment in agriculture, social security, medical care, education, science and environmental protection climbed 33.9percent from a year earlier to 1.48 trillion yuan, according the ministry.     Analysts said the macroeconomic polices should also aim to adjust economic structure for the long term and to create new growth points.     Jia Kang, president of the Institute of Fiscal Science, Ministry of Finance, said the government resolves to step up adjustment of economic structure as the economy is back on track for recovery.     Xie said the fiscal policy in the second will support innovation and energy conservation and emission reduction to sustain the economic growth.     On July 21, the ministry started a pilot program to subsidize 50 percent of investment for solar power projects, a move to boost the solar industry as a new growth point for the country's economy.     Xie also urged to strengthen supervision over fiscal management and improve information transparency in the second half as fiscal expenditure in the second half faced great pressure. Wen Jiabao also described the country's fiscal situation as "severe."     The ministry said the country's fiscal revenue in the first six months fell 2.4 percent from a year ago to about 3.4 trillion yuan, while its fiscal expenditure rose 26.3 percent to 2.89 trillion yuan. 

WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The G20 summit of world leaders in Pittsburgh this September should help promote the world economic recovery, said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei recently.     During the first coordinating meeting, which kicked off on Thursday, the participanting countries agreed that they should strengthen the coordination and cooperation to help the summit achieve positive and pragmatic outcomes.     The Pittsburgh Summit should continue to promote all sides to strengthen the coordination of their macro economic policies and to boost the world economic recovery, said He during the two-day meeting.     He also urged the upcoming summit to implement actively the outcomes of the G20 London Summit, to speed up the reforms of the international financial institutions, and to expand the representations of the emerging and developing countries.     China hopes the summit will pay more attention to the development issue and to boost the world economy to achieve long-term and sustained growth by promoting common development, said He.

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's economy would continue to recover from the world financial crisis in the latter half and expand at the rate of 8.5 percent for the whole year, said a report from the Bank of Communications on Sunday.     The country's economic development was expected to accelerate the pace and expand at 9 percent in the third quarter and 9.8 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the report.     The report indicated that the country would achieve the set goal of 8 percent economic growth for the full year，contributed by a robust domestic investment and consumption.     In the latter half, investment would represent fast increase, boosted by development from infrastructure construction, real estate, and the industrial sector, said the report.     China saw its economy growth slowed down amid the world financial crisis. BEIJING, Aug. 5 -- Chinese steel mills would prefer to import more iron ore from Brazil rather than Australia after the detention of four Shanghai-based employees of multinational miner Rio Tinto on charges of commercial espionage, according to data specialist ASXMarine. Spot iron ore vessel bookings from Brazil to China surged to a record 39 in July, from 24 in the previous month, Reuters quoted the data from ASXMarine.     Vessel bookings from Australia's main iron ore ports to China dropped to 31, down from 40 compared to the previous month and the lowest reading since February after the Rio Tinto scandal. Office in Shanghai, east China.    Chinese steelmakers have begun to hold their imports from Australian miners and are switching to Brazilian ore instead, domestic ports have witnessed.     Zang Dongsheng, deputy general manger of Rizhao Port Group, China's largest iron ore port which accounts for a fifth of the country's iron ore deliveries, said some of his customers have reduced their orders from Australia and turned to Brazil. But the exact figures would be available only in September as shipments from Brazil and Australia would be delayed by one or two months.     China's main ports received 56.5 million tons of iron ore in July, up 35 percent from the same period last year, the Ministry of Transport said yesterday.     Iron ore imports rose 29.3 percent year on year, to 297 million tons, in the first half of this year, while traders imported 131 million tons, up 90.4 percent from last year.     The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said last Friday that excess iron ore imports had distorted the demand-supply situation and hampered its position at negotiations with global miners on new long-term benchmark prices.     It also said foreign iron ore suppliers promoted massive selling on the cash market, leading to huge stockpiles and urged to limit import licenses.     However, the iron ore import figures in July reflected orders in May as it takes more than a month to deliver ore from Australia and Brazil, said Zang from Rizhao port.     Chinese steel mills started to reduce orders ever since CISA rejected the 33-percent cut offered by miners in May and held out for more discount, he said.     China News Service reported yesterday that CISA halted talks because iron ore spot prices have been "seriously distorted", citing a statement issued by the association.     However, no such statement could be found on the association's website, and its official surnamed Wang said the report was not true and talks were ongoing.
