BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- The China Investment Corporation (CIC), the country's sovereign wealth fund, announced Tuesday that it decided to buy 1.2 billion U.S. dollar common stocks in Morgan Stanley's 2.2-billion-U.S.-dollar common stock offering.     Morgan Stanley announced Tuesday it had priced a public offering of common equity of 2.2 billion U.S. dollars. The proceeds are intended to fully redeem the preferred capital of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) before the end of June.     The TARP is a program of the United States government to purchase assets and equity from financial institutions in order to strengthen its financial sector. It is the largest component of the U.S. government's measures in 2008 to address the subprime mortgage crisis.     Morgan Stanley notified the CIC of the offering in light of its healthy business relationship with CIC and the preemptive rights CIC holds. CIC plans to participate in this offering, according toa notice on its Web site.     CIC was optimistic in Morgan Stanley's future development as "Morgan Stanley is widely expected to be able to leverage on its strengthened financial position and will be on the road of resuming its successful trajectory amid the dramatic restructuring of the international financial services industry".     On December 19, 2007, CIC purchased 5.6 billion U.S. dollars mandatory convertible securities into Morgan Stanley common stock, representing approximately 9.86 percent equity ownership in Morgan Stanley.     However, after Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc.'s investment in Morgan Stanley in October 2008, CIC's equity ownership was diluted to approximately 7.68 percent.     This new purchase would bring CIC's equity ownership in Morgan Stanley back to approximately 9.86 percent, effectively reducing CIC's overall cost basis and increasing the returns potential, said CIC.     According to a statement posted on Morgan Stanley Web site Tuesday, it has priced a public offering of approximately 80.2 million shares of common stock to the public at 27.44 dollars per share.     CIC has agreed to purchase 44.7 million shares of common stock at the public offering price while the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc. has agreed to buy 16 million shares, the Morgan Stanley statement said.

BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso here on Thursday, calling on the two sides to cherish achievements made in bilateral ties.     "Since my visit to Japan in May last year, related parties on the two sides have made every effort to implement the consensus and decisions agreed upon during the visit, and had attained important progress in promoting the strategic and mutually-beneficial relations between China and Japan," Hu told Aso at the Great Hall of the People.     "These achievements have not come easy and should be cherished by us," said Hu.     Hu noted that as the global financial crisis spreads, trade between China and Japan had declined obviously. He urged the two sides to take effective measures to put bilateral trade and investment back on the track of stable growth as soon as possible. WASHINGTON, April 22 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Tuesday that the prosperity of the American economy needs the rest of the world to recover.     "The rest of the world needs the U.S. economy and financial system to recover in order for it to revive," said Geithner in remarks to the Economic Club of Washington. "We remain at the center of global economic activity with financial and trade ties to every region of the globe."     "Just as importantly, we need the rest of the world to recover if we are to prosper again here at home," the Treasury chief said.     "Before the crisis, U.S. exports were among our economy's fastest-growing sectors, accounting for more than 6 million American jobs, or about 5 percent of total private sector employment in the U.S. Now, they are one of its fastest-shrinking," he stated.     He called for global cooperation to cope with the current crisis, which he said was "the most severe crisis in generations."     "As a consequence, the community of nations must work together -- and that work has already begun -- to revive economies around the world and to lay the groundwork for a new, more stable and more sustainable pattern of growth in the future," he said.

TAIPEI, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian has been indicted on new corruption charges, prosecutors said here Tuesday.     While in office, Chen and his wife Wu Shu-chen took 10 million New Taiwan dollars (302,000 U.S. dollars) in bribes from a local businesswoman, and demanded bribes and donations totaling 300 million New Taiwan dollars from a former banker, prosecutors said at a press conference.     Chen was first indicted on Dec. 12 for money laundering and bribery. He and his wife were charged with embezzling 104 million New Taiwan dollars (3.15 million U.S. dollars) in public funds and accepting bribes of at least 9 million U.S. dollars in a land purchase deal. Chen and his collaborators are also accused of laundering the illegal income.     Chen has been in detention since last December and faces life in prison if convicted.     He was elected to the post of Taiwan leader eight years ago but was ousted in an election in May last year.

MOSCOW, May 10 (Xinhua) -- The construction of the China-Russia oil pipeline conforms with the strategic goals of China and Russia to diversify the former's energy imports and latter's energy exports, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Liu Guchang has said.     The move reflects the two countries' confidence and determination to tide over together the current global economic downturn, Liu said in a recent written interview with Xinhua on Sunday.     The signing of a package of oil cooperation deals between China and Russia as well as the start of the oil pipeline project marked a major breakthrough in their energy cooperation, represented a new height of China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation and further substantiate this partnership, Liu said.     Trade of crude via the pipeline will help stabilize and enhance the growth in bilateral trade, the diplomat added.     Under the agreement reached between both countries, China and Russia will jointly build and operate the pipeline from Russia's Siberian city of Skovorodino to China's northeastern city of Daqing as its terminal via China's border city of Mohe.     The construction of the Russian part of the pipeline started on April 27, and the Chinese part will be launched in mid-May. The pipeline, with an annual capacity of 15 million tons of crude to China within 20 years, is expected to go into operation in October2010.     The two sides will study the feasibility of increasing its delivery capacity after the pipeline is put into production, Liu said. The project will ensure stable and secure oil supplies to China, open a stable and sound market for Russian oil, and boost the cooperation between enterprises of the two countries in oil exploration and refining, Liu said.     Such a cooperation mode may well serve as a good example for the two sides to further broaden and deepen their all-round, long-term and stable energy cooperation in natural gas, nuclear energy and electric power, Liu said

TAIPEI, May 31 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese mainland business delegation arrived in Taiwan Sunday to kick off a buying spree to expand trade ties and offset the effects of the global economic downturn.     The group, organized by the Mainland Association for Cross-Strait Economic and Trade Exchanges, comprised about 80 representatives of 35 companies, including IT and home appliance giants Lenovo, Haier, Changhong and ZTE.     The shopping list could include home appliances, machinery, textiles and foodstuffs manufactured on the island, said Li Shuilin, director of the association and delegation head.     The mainland businesses would hold talks with Taiwan firms in Taipei and Kaohsiung to learn more about their products and market potential in the mainland, Li said.     They would probably make some purchasing orders, although no exact plans had been announced, he added.     The delegation, the first of its kind, was warmly received on the island amid the mainland's repeated calls for collaboration across the Taiwan Strait to cope with the international economic downturn.     This marked a substantial step by the mainland to help boost investment in Taiwan and the purchase of Taiwan products, proposed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in April, Li said.     The mainland announced last week that seven to nine procurement delegations to Taiwan would be organized from May to September to help develop the island economy during the global downturn.     The China Video Industry Association would organize a visit of leading mainland television producers on Monday to hammer out a planned 2.2-billion-U.S.-dollar contract for TV parts produced in Taiwan.     Also in June, tea merchants and fruit organizations would visit central and south Taiwan. In September, representatives of trading cooperatives from 11 provinces and cities, six industry associations and 13 agricultural products producers will visit the island.     Mainland telecommunications companies, including China Telecom, China Mobile and China Unicom, also plan purchasing visits the island.
