SINGAPORE, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chief of General Staff of China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) Chen Bingde called on Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and military officials on Friday.     During his meeting with Singapore Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense Teo Chee Hean, Chen said that China and Singapore share common strategic interests in economic development and regional security. CAIRO, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Delivering a speech at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, capital of Egypt, on Saturday, visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao described the world as full of colors and with different civilizations which constitute cultural diversity.     The history of human civilization has testified that cultural diversity is necessary for human prosperity, and dialogue, exchange and integration among different civilizations have formed an irreversible historical trend and a necessity for the improvement and continuous development of civilizations.     "Dialogue, exchange and integration among different civilizations form the powerful current of human civilization surging ahead ceaselessly," Wen said.     Today's world is home to over 200 countries and regions, more than 2,500 ethnic groups and 6,000-plus languages, the Chinese premier cited just a few numbers to demonstrate the diversity.     Under the current international circumstance which is undergoing profound and complex changes featuring increasingly deepened world multi-polarization and economic globalization, peace and development remain the two main themes facing the human society. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States underlined that each country and its people have the right to choose their own path, and agreed to hold the next round of human rights dialogue in Washington by the end of February 2010, said the China-U.S. joint statement issued Tuesday.     According to the statement, the Chinese and U.S. sides agreed that all countries should respect each other's choice of a development model.     "Both sides recognized that China and the United States have differences on the issue of human rights," said the statement, "Addressing these differences in the spirit of equality and mutual respect, as well as promoting and protecting human rights consistent with international human rights instruments, the two sides agreed to hold the next round of the official human rights dialogue in Washington D.C. by the end of February 2010."     The two sides agreed that promoting cooperation in the field of law and exchanges on the rule of law serves the interests and needs of the citizens and governments of both countries, and decided to convene the China-U.S. Legal Experts Dialogue at an early date.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States would work together for positive results at the Copenhagen summit slated for December this year, Chinese President Hu Jintao said here on Tuesday.     "President Obama and I agreed to expand the China-U.S. cooperation in the fields of climate change, energy and environment," Hu told the press after talks with visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     China and the United States would cooperate with all sides concerned, on the basis of the "common but differentiated responsibilities" principle and their respective capabilities, to help produce positive results at the Copenhagen summit on climate change, said Hu.     China and the United States have signed documents of cooperation including a memorandum of understanding on enhancing cooperation on climate change, energy and the environment, and have officially launched an initiative on a joint research center on clean energy, he added.

MACAO, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Saturday that "one country, two systems" had been successfully implemented in both Hong Kong and Macao since their return to the motherland.     "The two special administrative regions have accumulated rich experience in the regard, and can learn from each other and make progress together," said the president when meeting with Donald Tsang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) and principal officials of the Hong Kong SAR government.     Hu and Tsang arrived here Saturday to attend the celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the third-term government of the Macao SAR. Police searched thousands of hotels, nightclubs and Internet bars, questioned 47,500 people and stopped 24,600 vehicles.     The four prisoners were on the run for only 66 hours before they were apprehended.     "We appreciate the local residents' help in hunting the prisoners," said Zhao Liping, head of the public security department of the region." BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese mainland official on Wednesday urged media organizations across the Taiwan Strait to cover more stories on cross-Strait relations and report news events in an objective and comprehensive manner.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks in a meeting with a group of Taiwan media representatives led by Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the island's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).     Media organizations play an irreplaceable role in promoting information exchanges, helping people on both sides better understand each other and eliminating estrangement, Jia said.     In light of the bright prospect of the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, media exchanges between the two sides are facing unprecedented opportunities, he said.     Jia called for an early establishment of resident media bureaus on both sides and closer cooperation between news organizations to promote traditional Chinese culture.     He encouraged the staff of the media industry to seek common ground while shelving differences.     On behalf of the SEF and the people in Taiwan, Chiang expressed gratitude for the mainland's donations and assistance after the island was hit by Typhoon Morakot in August.     Mainland's donations, which were transferred to Taiwan mainly through the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), will be used for reconstruction in Taiwan, Chiang said.     Chiang also stressed the need for media at both sides to carry out further communication and cooperation.     According to Jia, the ARATS and the SEF had initially agreed to have the fourth round of talks in Taiwan's Taichung in mid or late December.

But if the per kilometer fare rises, many will think differently."     According to the new policy, the government, taxi companies, and passengers will share the cost of gasoline price fluctuations.     Beijing last saw an increase in taxi fares three years ago.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday that Shanghai and Chicago can learn from each other especially on clean energy.     He made the remarks during a dialogue with Chinese students at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum. It is his first trip to China since taking office in January.     "It's a terrific opportunity for us to learn from each other," he said.     "In the United States we are learning how to develop buildings that use much less energy and that are much more energy-efficient. I noticed in Shanghai many new buildings are growing up. It's important to incorporate these new technologies so that each building is energy-efficient when it comes to lighting, when it comes to heating," he said.     Clean energy issue is going to be a major focus in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, he said.     Shanghai and Chicago have been sister cities since 1985.
