SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said here Monday that the biggest threat to U.S. security is the terrorist groups like al-Qaida.     "I do continue to believe the greatest threat to United States security are the terrorist networks like al-Qaida," Obama said during a dialogue with Chinese students in Shanghai.     He said U.S. troops moved into Afghanistan because al-Qaida wasbeing hosted by the Taliban in Afghanistan but the terror group has now moved over the border of Afghanistan and has networks with other extremist groups throughout the region.     The United States now has 68,000 troops fighting in Afghanistan. Obama is going to decide on whether to grant a request by the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Stanley McChrystal, to send 40,000 more troops.     "I do believe it is important for us to stabilize Afghanistan, so that the people of Afghanistan can protect themselves, and they can also be a partner in reducing the power of those extremist networks," he said.     The U.S. president admitted that defeating al-Qaida is a difficult task and is not just a military exercise.     Obama flew into Shanghai from Singapore on Sunday night to kickoff his four-day visit to China, his first trip to the Asian country since taking office in January.     Later Monday, he will fly to Beijing, where he will hold talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao and meet with other Chinese leaders.

BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday called for tightened prevention measures against A/H1N1 influenza as the country recorded an increasing number of people catching seasonal influenza upon the arrival of winter.     In a visit to a children's hospital in the Chinese capital, Wen said the country faces severe challenges in the prevention and control of A/H1N1 and some areas are likely to have a sharp increase in the number of patients infected by the epidemic.     He said the country is fully confident and capable of doing well the prevention and control work of the A/H1N1 flu and would spare no effort in helping patients, especially those with severe symptoms, to recover. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- China and the United States on Tuesday voiced support for the peace and stability in South Asia.     "The two sides welcomed all efforts conducive to peace, stability and development in South Asia," said a joint statement issued after a meeting here between Chinese President Hu Jintao and visiting U.S. President Barack Obama.     They support the efforts of Afghanistan and Pakistan to fight terrorism, maintain domestic stability and achieve sustainable economic and social development, said the statement.     They also pledged support for the improvement and growth of relations between India and Pakistan.     The two sides are ready to strengthen communication, dialogue and cooperation on issues related to South Asia and work together to promote peace, stability and development in that region, according to the statement.

BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- China's economy is expected to grow by 9 percent next year on robust property and automobile sectors, chairman of CCXI, a China-based credit rating agency said Tuesday.     Mao Zhenhua, the chairman, also forecast the country's GDP growth this year would expand by as much as 8.8 percent. He added China's economic growth for the next ten years would slightly fall from the peak in 2010 to around 7 percent around 2020, still a relatively fast pace compared to other countries.     But he cautioned the heavy reliance on exports and investment as major drivers to the Chinese economy has not changed currently, and that the structure for economic growth has not been optimized.     Mao made the remarks while addressing a conference that also shared outlooks for China's property market, and its automobile industry for the next year.     "China's property market is to remain steady in the next 6 or 12 months due to strong underlying housing demand in the country," said Kaven Tsang, assistant vice president of Moody's Investors Service Hong Kong Limited.     He attributed strong housing demand to rapid economic growth, expanding urbanization and rising living standards in the country.     Reduced inventory after strong sales over the past few quarters and improved liquidity of developers are also preventing a substantial decline in the property sector, he said.     According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), housing sales in China reached 2.75 trillion yuan (403 billion U.S. dollars) in value for the first three quarters this year, a year-on-year increase of 73 percent.     Amid weak exports, the Chinese government will also continue to promote domestic consumption and see fixed-asset investment increase, with the property sector remaining "central" to the Chinese economy, said Tsang.     NBS figures show investment in the real estate sector in China posted a 28.4 percent growth in October this year.     The CCXI also forecast China would continue to see robust growth in auto sales in 2010, driven by the steady development of national economy, rise in individual income and stronger demand from China's central and west regions.     Chang Haizhong, senior CCXI analyst, said "cars have great market potential in the central and west regions which will become a new growth point for auto industry."     For example, sales of heavy trucks are expected to grow considerably next year, boosted by the government's massive fixed-asset investment, fast development of logistics and expansion of expressway network.     "Bus and sightseeing coach sales will also rise next year, as the government is determined to step up development of public transit systems, and people show more willingness to travel," Chang said.     He also said auto joint ventures in the country would try to seek a bigger share of middle and low-end market while keeping the dominant position in high-end market next year, posing a threat to domestic self-owned automakers.     Chevrolet, an arm of Shanghai GM, introduced SAIL, a new car model last week. Sales of the new model, priced less than 60,000 yuan, would start in January next year.     In the first ten months this year, auto sales in China broke the 10 million mark to 10.89 million units, up 36.23 percent from a year ago, surpassing the United States as the world's largest auto market.

BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao stressed on Sunday that the final ends of the nation's economic growth is to improve people's well-being, which is always a priority on the government's agenda amid the global financial crisis. Despite the tight fiscal condition, China beefed up the income and welfare enjoyed by the retirees and low-income residents, and unveiled the significant health-care reform in 2008, Wen told Xinhua in an exclusive interview.     "We will overcome every difficulty to well implement the health-care reform which has close bearing on people's health," he said. The investment was an increase of 165.33 billion yuan from a year ago.

BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese lawmaker has proposed to hold people who use public funds on lavish banquets legally accountable so as to curb the widespread practice.     Zhao Linzhong, deputy to the National People's Congress, the top legislature, was quoted by Sunday's Workers' Daily as saying that social engagements in which dining and drinking is a must seriously undermined the work style of the government and social morals.     Zhao, also board chairman of Furun Holding Group Co. Ltd. in east Zhejiang Province, said some government officials and entrepreneurs had their health and work affected by excessive dining and wining and their health and work.     It is a common practice for Chinese to have banquets or drinking parties when treating important guests, on major occasions and during festivals. Some Chinese have taken advantage of drinking and wining opportunities to seal business deals or seek political favors.     A modest reception could make visitors think that they are not important to the host.     Zhao blamed the social tradition as part of the reason, but added that the lack of supervision and legal loopholes had made the practice continue to prevail.     China has no laws governing the excessive drinking and wining at public expenses.     In October, Fu Pinghong, head of a hospital at Gaoting township in east Zhejiang Province, was sentenced to 11 years in prison on corruption and bribery charges. He had allegedly spent 440,000 yuan (64,433 U.S. dollars) of public funds on drinking, wining and entertaining guests.     Zhao believed that lavishing public funds equalized to embezzlement of state assets and laws should be amended to add the criminal offence of extravagant and wasteful spending.     Laws should be established to regulate banquets at public expenses and the local governments' budgets on banquets should be approved by legislatures, he said.

VICTORIA, Seychelles, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Zhou Yongkang, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), has met leaders of the Seychelles on bilateral relations. JINAN, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's Yanzhou Coal Mining Co. Ltd. has got an official approval to take over Australian coal mining company Felix Resources, according to the company's bulletin on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Friday.     The deal involving 3.3 billion Australian dollars (3 billion U.S. dollars) in a contractual agreement reached by the two companies in August would be the largest of its kind between Chinese and Australian firms.     Yanzhou Coal said in the bulletin that the National Commission of Development and Reform has approved the company's bid to take over 100 percent of the stake in Felix.     The company said that after the takeover of Felix, it would obtain an approved coal reserve of 1.5 billion tons in Australia. Its annual coal output in Australia is expected to exceed 10 million tons, accounting for one third of the company's production in China.     Yanzhou Coal, headquartered in east China's Shandong Province, is listed on stock exchanges in Hong Kong, New York and Shanghai. It owns Austar Coal Mine in Australia, and mines in north China's Shanxi Province and Shandong Province, according to information on the company's website.
