BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Many countries around the world said the July 5 riot in northwest China is an internal affair of the country, and the Chinese government is handling the incident properly.     A spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Andrei Popov, said Xinjiang is an inalienable part of China, and the unrest is a purely internal matter of China.     The riot in Urumqi, the capital of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,680 injured.     Popov also expressed hope that China could soon restore stability in the region by adopting effective measures in accordance with the law.     He said Belarus expresses its deep sympathy to the people who suffered personal injuries or loss of property during the violence.     A spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, Abdul Basit, said his country deplores any attempt to hinder China's progress.     "We deplore any such attempt" which tries to impede the progress which has been achieved by China in the context of social harmony, he said in a recent interview with Xinhua.     "We are committed not to allow any element in Pakistan to work against the interests of China because China's interests are Pakistan's interests. We cannot allow any activity that will damage China's interests," Basit said.     Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued shortly after the Urumqi riot, applauded the efforts of the Chinese leadership to promote the concept of harmony both at home, in Asia and the rest of the world.     Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan said his country supports the principle of resolving the issue within the framework of the territorial integrity of China.     The Turkish Foreign Ministry said the country highly values its relations with China and does not intend to interfere in China's internal affairs.     Thailand's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday the July 5 riot is a domestic issue of China and it believs China is capable of stabilizing the situation and restoring peace and harmony in Xinjiang.     Combodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said: "The Chinese government is taking appropriate measures to handle the issue."     The Foreign Ministry of Laos also issued a statement on the July 5 riot. It said Laos believes the measures the Chinese government has adopted to safeguard social stability are necessary and legitimate, and expressed hope the government could bring peace back to the region at an early date.  

SEOUL, May 17 (Xinhua) -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak met Sunday with a group of 20 quake-affected children from China's Sichuan Province, encouraging them to make unremitting efforts to improve and fulfill themselves so as to become useful talented persons in the future.     Under the invitation of the President Lee, 20 children from the earth-quake hit areas visited the presidential office, Cheong Wa DAE, with their 20 friends coming from a South Korean nursery school.     Lee encouraged the quake-affected children to overcome the shock and difficulties.     "We can never loose hope. BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao held talks with his Sierra Leone counterpart Ernest Bai Koroma here Monday, both agreeing to push the bilateral friendly and cooperative ties to a new height.     Hu gave Koroma a red-carpet welcome, including a 21-gun salute and parade, at the Great Hall of the People. He started their talks by congratulating the Sierra Leone and African people on the 46th anniversary of Africa Day, a festival to celebrate the founding of the Organization of African Unity, which was succeeded by the African Union in 2002. Bilateral relations have shown a sound momentum of accelerated growth since President Koroma took his office.     The two heads of state agreed to explore cooperation in the areas of infrastructure construction and resource exploitation.     To boost bilateral ties, Hu proposed to keep close contacts among the two countries' leaders, maintain friendly exchanges between lawmaking organs and ruling parties, and make joint efforts to facilitate bilateral education, public health and human resources programs.     He told Koroma China values its trade ties with Sierra Leon, and is committed to helping speed up the country's economic reconstruction.     Hu welcomed more Sierra Leone young people to study in China, pledging to foster more professionals for the country.     China had offered scholarship to altogether 311 Sierra Leone students since 1976.     Hu also vowed to promote the accomplishment of existing bilateral projects as scheduled, offer aid to Sierra Leone's education, culture, public health programs, and enhance coordination with it on major issues including peacekeeping, poverty reduction and fighting against global challenges.     Koroma said his country welcomed increased investment from China to aid his country's economy, vowing to create sound environment and conditions.     "Sierra Leone highly values relations with China, and is ready to cement all-round cooperation with the country and learn from its development experience," he said.     Koroma called on enhanced bilateral cooperation on international and regional issues, in particular African issues, to further push forward Sierra Leone-China and Africa-China ties.     The two presidents attended a signing ceremony for three cooperative agreements including one on China's providing anti-malaria medicines to Sierra Leone.     The West African country, once British colony, gained independence in 1961 and founded the Republic of Sierra Leone. With a population of over 6.1 million and an area of some 71,740 square kilometers, the country is the lowest ranked country on the Human Development Index and seventh lowest on the Human Poverty Index, following years of civil wars.     China forged diplomatic ties with Sierra Leone on July 29, 1971. Between that date and this March, China had invested 33.9 million U.S. dollars in the country and helped build more than 30 projects including hydropower stations, a national stadium, hospitals and government buildings.     Sierra Leone rolled out its first CDMA network in the country last month with help from Chinese equipment vendor Huawei Technologies. Sierratel, the country's government-owned telecommunication company, received a delivery of 16.6 million U.S. dollars worth of wireless telecommunication equipment from Huawei, funded by the Chinese government's preferential loan.     Chinese ambassador to Sierra Leone Qiu Shaofang said China would build two hydropower dams in Sierra Leone in the next three years.     "China has offered long-term economic aid to Sierra Leone and has promised not to reduce assistance in spite of the global slump," said Qiu.     Bilateral trade topped 83.71 million U.S. dollars last year, up 30.4 percent year on year. With the global downturn, total bilateral trade in the first four months of the year was down 40 percent to 12 million U.S. dollars.     China mainly exports machinery and electrical products, textiles and chemical products to Sierra Leone, while imports logs, natural rubber and coco beans.     Koroma's ongoing China trip will also take him to central China's Hunan Province and the country's financial hub Shanghai.

BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China did not lose its advantages in foreign trade despite global downturn and could retain foreign trade level above the global average once global economy recovered, a senior Chinese official said Saturday.     Yi Xiaozhun, vice commerce minister, was speaking at the Global Think Tank Summit that ended Saturday in Beijing.     Though China's foreign trade would not rise sharply as it did in the past few years, the country did not lose its foreign trade advantages thanks to policies to stimulate domestic demands, Yi said.     He said China had been diversifying foreign trade and reported increased trade with countries in Africa, Middle East, middle Asia and Latin America.     Yi also called for halt on protectionism, saying that protectionism had been picking up and about 40 percent of anti-dumping cases and 70 percent of anti-subsidy cases targeted China.     He called for pushing forward the Doha round negotiation, which he believed was key in fighting against protectionism.

Such a trend has helped advance the South-North dialogue and cooperation, push forward the development of multilateralism, and promote the resolution of global issues.     Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi decided to move the venue of G8 summit from the island of Sardinia to L'aquila, where an earthquake on April 6 killed 295 people and left over 60,000 people homeless.     The Italian government hopes the shift of the summit venue could attract more attention to the plight of the victims in L'aquila and help the devastated city's reconstruction.     Since the end of last year, President Hu has attended a series of major international conferences on the financial crisis and other major issues.     He participated in the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the first meeting of BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) leaders in Russia's Ural city of Yekaterinburg in June.     He was present at the G20 financial summit in London in the beginning of April.     The Chinese president and other leaders from the G20 members also gathered in Washington for a summit on the financial crisis on Nov. 15 last year.     Days later, Hu flew after a Cuba visit to Peru to attend the Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Cooperation Organization (APEC) on regional economic issues and the financial crisis.     Other Chinese leaders including Premier Wen Jiabao have also participated in several international conferences to seek joint actions with other countries to deal with the crisis.     Premier Wen stressed confidence, cooperation and responsibility as a key to overcoming the financial storm at the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in the Swiss skiing resort of Davos in January.

ROME, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's forthcoming visit to Italy ahead of the G8 summit paves the way for stronger bilateral ties, an Italian expert told Xinhua in an interview.     Luca La Bella, a China analyst with Rome's International Studies Center, said that in the past decades, political, economic and cultural relations between Italy and China have improved. "Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Italy will reinforce this strategic collaboration," he said.     Hu will attend a meeting between the leaders of the Group of Eight (G8) and emerging economies from July 8 to 10 in L'Aquila.     Before the G8 summit, he will pay a state visit to Italy from July 5 to 8 at the invitation of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. After the G8 meeting, the Chinese leader will visit Portugal from July 10 to 11.     China-Italy ties have maintained a sound momentum of rapid development, especially since 2004, when the two countries forged the first all-round strategic partnership to boost political and economic cooperation, La Bella said.     "The Italian Culture Year in China of 2006 was very successful," La Bella said. "Institutional exchange and business ties have increased. Reciprocal awareness of each other's culture and history is now greater."     The Italian firms in China enjoy Chinese government's support, the expert said, "Trade exchanges have increased. Italy imports from China technological goods, and exports Italian fashions and brands to China."     The two presidents will surely discuss in their meeting the upcoming Chinese Year of Culture in Italy, scheduled for 2010. It will be China's turn this time to be culturally, economically and politically present in Italy, La Bella said.     Numerous events are planned for the Chinese Year in Italy, which marks celebrations of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.     It will be an opportunity for high level political, economic and cultural exchanges between Chinese and Italian leaders and industry representatives.     According to La Bella, fostering bilateral ties with China is of crucial importance to Italy.     China and Italy are well-tuned politically as well, he added. "Italy pursues the one-China policy and is a front runner in lifting the arms embargo against China," he said.

CHONGQING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers set off a blast in the debris of a landslide Saturday in an effort to open up a shaft to reach the 27 trapped miners in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.     Rescuers ignited explosives at 8:07 p.m. at a location calculated by experts to reach the shaft where the miners were believed to be buried.     More blasts are needed as about 1.5 million cubic meters of rock and dirt slumped 600 meters from a nearby mountain Friday afternoon, covering up the entrance to the mining pit.     Experts said ventilation, food and water could not be sent into the shaft and the air underground could only support the miners for about seven days.     Experts are still busy surveying and revising plans of future blasts.     So far, 72 people, including 21 local residents, the 27 trapped miners and 18 miners who worked on the ground, two telecom company workers and four passers-by, remained missing.     The accident happened at about 3 p.m. Friday at an iron ore mining area of Jiwei Mountain in Tiekuang Township, Wulong County, about 170 kilometers southeast of Chongqing's downtown.     Chinese vice-premier Zhang Dejiang inspected the site early Saturday morning, asking rescuers to try their best to save life while avoiding secondary disasters. Experts are called on to find out the causes of the landslide.

ANSHAN, Liaoning, June 16 (Xinhua) -- An official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said Tuesday that the proposed alliance of Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton had a "strong monopolistic color" and Chinese firms would watch it closely and find ways to cope with it.     Last year, China imported 440 million tonnes of iron ore, half of the world's total, so any slight market changes would affect Chinese steel makers. China's anti-monopoly law should apply in the proposed deal, said Chen Yanhai, head of the raw material department of MIIT at an industry meeting held in the northeastern city of Anshan, Liaoning Province.     If the tie-up proved to be monopolistic, "we have to seek new policies and regulations to allow Chinese companies have a bigger say in iron ore pricing," said Chen without elaborating.     Rio Tinto scrapped a proposed 19.5-billion-U.S.-dollar investment by Aluminum Corp. of China, or Chinalco, on June 5, and turned to rival BHP Billiton, which would pay Rio Tinto 5.8 billion U.S. dollars to set up a joint venture to run the iron ore resources of both companies in west Australia.     On Monday, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce Yao Jian said if the revenue of the joint venture reached "a certain amount," China's anti-monopoly law would apply.     That law requires a company to get government approval before consolidation if its global revenue exceeds 10 billion yuan (1.47 billion U.S. dollars) and its revenue in China exceeds 2 billion yuan.     An anti-monopoly review is also necessary if two or more parties in the company had more than 400 million yuan of revenue in China in the previous fiscal year.     In the year ended 30 June, BHP Billiton's revenue in China was 11.7 billion U.S. dollars, while that for Rio Tinto was 10.8 billion U.S. dollars, according to the companies' websites.     It was unclear what actions China would take if the case was determined to be covered by the Chinese anti-monopoly law.     At the meeting Tuesday, Chen also said domestic steel makers should beef up technology and innovation to cut energy consumption and raise efficiency. Also, he said, China "should increase exploration of domestic mines to reduce reliance on imports."
