GUANGZHOU/NANJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The first cross-Strait weekend chartered flight from China's mainland to Taiwan took off at 6:31 a.m. from Guangzhou, capital city of the southern Guangdong Province early Friday morning.     More than 100 mainland tourists aboard the Airbus A330 became the first group of people on a sight-seeing tour allowed to Taiwan amid warming cross-Strait ties. The flight has 258 passengers.     The historic flight by China Southern Airlines (CSA) is scheduled to land at Taipei Taoyuan Airport in Taiwan at 8:10 a.m. after a 1,124-km journey.     "I have been expecting to visit Taiwan, the Treasure Island, and my dream will finally come true today," mainland tourist Shi Anwei told Xinhua before boarding the plane. "I was too excited to sleep last night."     Following suit was a flight from Xiamen of eastern Fujian Province that took off at 7:16 a.m. The flight, MF881 by the Xiamen Airlines with 203 passengers, is expected to arrive at the Songshan Airport of Taipei at 8:51 a.m.     Each passenger witnessing the historical moment received a gift package from the airlines, which enclosed a model plane and map of Taiwan.     At a separate ceremony in East China's Nanjing City marking thecity as the fifth new city to conduct the cross-Strait chartered flight, Zheng Lizhong, mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait (ARATS) Executive Vice Chairman, said the start of the weekend chartered flight and beginning of the mainland tourists' visit to Taiwan "is destined to open a new chapter in the cross-Straits cultural and economic communications."     A high-ranking mainland aviation official said that since Shanghai was chosen as the first city for cross-Strait flight operation five years ago, "there has been a small step each year, but they have amounted to a major step in the past five years."     "The ever more frequent and convenient flights across the Straits are not only improved means of transportation, they are also an emotional and cultural bridge for the people, and changed the way of thinking of both sides," the official said.     However, he said, real direct flight hadn't been realized yet as all of the planes flew to Taipei by way of Hong Kong.     Quoting Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the great pioneer of Chinese democratic revolution, the official said, "the real success is still in front and we need to work harder."     The first chartered flight from Nanjing started at 8:05 a.m.     Some 760 Chinese mainland tourists from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xiamen and Guangzhou started the first weekend charter flight to Taiwan on Friday, three weeks after the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits and the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation met last month.

LANZHOU, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Inspectors had found poisonous chemical in the Sanlu infant formula produced by one of its partner producers in northwest China's Gansu Province, an official said on Sunday.     Two out of the 12 samples randomly selected from the Sanlu milk powder produced by the Haoniu Dairy Co., Ltd. in Jiuquan City had tested positive for melamine, said Xian Hui, vice-governor of Gansu.     "The products of Haoniu have been sealed up," he said.     The test was conducted after the Sanlu Group, a leading Chinese dairy producer based in northern Hebei Province, admitted that it had found some of its baby milk powder products were contaminated with melamine, a chemical raw material strictly forbidden by the country to be used in food processing.     As of Saturday, a total of 432 babies throughout the nation have been sickened with kidney stones after drinking the contaminated milk powder.     Haoniu was founded in 2002 with the registered capital of 51 million yuan (7.45 million U.S. dollars). Its production was in line with the Sanlu standard and its products use the Sanlu trademark.     As of Saturday night, Gansu has reported 102 cases of infant kidney stone caused by the Sanlu milk powder. Two babies have died, Xian said.     The province has so far seized altogether 164,000 packs of Sanlu milk powder.

BEIJING, May 22 -- The State Council yesterday ordered government departments to cut spending by 5 percent this year to free up money for quake reconstruction.    The money will help to finance a 70 billion yuan (10 billion U.S. dollars) fund for rebuilding after the May 12 quake, which killed tens of thousands, the Cabinet said on its website. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao speaks on the quake relief work during a meeting of the State Council, in Beijing, capital of China, May 21, 2008.The death toll from the quake rose to 41,353 by noon yesterday, and 274,683 were injured, according to the Information Office of the State Council. The number of missing has been put at 32,666.     The overall impact of the quake on China's fast-growing economy is expected to be limited. Sichuan is a major source of coal, natural gas and some farm goods but has little industry.     The quake destroyed thousands of buildings, knocked out power and phone services and damaged factories, mines and other facilities. State-owned and private companies suffered 67 billion yuan (9.5 billion U.S. dollars) in quake losses, according to the government's preliminary estimates.     Yesterday's Cabinet statement gave no details of how much money the spending cuts were expected to raise. But the reported budget for the central government this year, including the military, is 1.3 trillion yuan (187 billion U.S. dollars) - and 5 percent of that would be 65 billion yuan (9.3 billion U.S. dollars).     Beijing will set a moratorium on new government building projects, Premier Wen Jiabao told a State Council meeting.     Wen said the quake "added uncertainties" to the economy but he said it was stable and its fundamentals were not affected, Xinhua reported.     Donations to quake-hit regions reached 16 billion yuan (2.29 billion U.S. dollars), of which 1.76 billion yuan (250 million U.S. dollars) has been forwarded to affected areas, according to the information office.     In addition, the Ministry of Finance announced yesterday that it has allocated another 660 million yuan (94.83 million U.S. dollars) in relief funds to quake-stricken areas.     As the summer draws near, the quake-hit regions are facing mounting pressure to prevent epidemics.     About 45,000 medical workers are working in all quake-hit counties and townships in Sichuan, according to the Ministry of Health.     About 1,196 tons of disinfectants and bactericides were distributed, the ministry said in a statement.     In seven out of the 11 worst-hit counties, sanitation work has been completed and in the other four, one-third of the townships have been covered.     According to local health departments, doctors found 58 cases of gas gangrene, a bacterial infection that produces gas within gangrenous tissues, as of Sunday.     But officials said the virus does not affect people without open wounds.     Meanwhile, rescuers are still fighting time to find survivors.     According to the Department of General Staff of the People's Liberation Army, rescuers saved and evacuated 396,811 people to safe places as of yesterday noon.     A total of 6,452 have been dug out alive from the rubble, with 77 rescued in the 36 hours to noon yesterday.     The Ministry of Health said that 3,424 people injured in the quake had died in hospitals.     Hospitals have taken in 59,394 injured people since the quake, of whom 30,289 were discharged, the ministry said.     Power has been restored in most parts of quake-hit areas but Beichuan County, one of the worst hit, remained blacked out and electricity in Hongyuan was cut off again due to aftershocks, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission said in a statement.     Experts yesterday said there was no need to worry that the 33 lakes in Sichuan - formed after landslides blocked rivers - would burst their banks.     "Generally speaking, those lakes are safe because the flood season is yet to come," said Liu Ning, general engineer of the Ministry of Water Resources.     "We are monitoring the lakes round the clock," he added.

BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday paid visits to three best-known senior intellectuals living in Beijing, honoring his own promise to call on these over-90-year elders once every year.     The three were linguist Ji Xianlin, founder of China's space industry Qian Xuesen, and "China's Madame Curie" He Zehui, who is the widow of China's Father of A-bomb Qian Sanqiang (1913-92). Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) talks with Ji Xianlin, a well-known Chinese author and translator at the General Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army in Beijing, capital of China, on Aug. 2, 2008."I've come to congratulate your birthday in advance," said Wen to Ji, who is now staying in the General Hospital of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). Ji turns 97 on August 6.     Ji, a former deputy president of the prestigious Beijing University, is known for his translation works and fruitful study on Sanscrit and other ancient Indian languages, speaks good English and German, and can read French and Russian.     In their talks, Wen exchanged views with Ji on issues like the relief efforts for the deadly May 12 Earthquake, foreign language education, and the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing.     "Our history has always witnessed disasters like floods, droughts and earthquakes, but our nation has never been collapsed, and quite the contrary, (our nation) has become stronger and stronger after these disasters," said the premier, who is also member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau.     Ji agreed with Wen and he said in reply, "It is same for a nation and a person. Disasters train will of a person and a nation, as well." Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) vists Qian Xuesen, a renowned scientist and founder of China's space technology at Qian's home in Beijing, capital of China, on Aug. 2, 2008. Afterwards, Wen visited Qian at his residence.     The premier had many face-to-face talks with Qian, who is four months younger than Ji, during the late 1980s and the early 1990s,when Wen was in charge of the development of science and technology in the CPC Central Committee. Qian was then president of the China Association for Science and Technology.     Being a geological expert himself, Wen had supported Qian for his strategic proposals on the development of sand industry, mathematics, and chemical industry. Wen even organized some experts to assist Qian in research projects.     In their meeting, the premier informed the scientist of the country's progress in space industry, such as the forthcoming launch of the Shenzhou-7 manned spacecraft, the Second Phase of the Moon-orbiting Program, and the country's ambitious plan to build large passenger aircraft.     Wen attributed China's achievements in science and technology to the decades-long efforts made by the elder generation Chinese scientists.     The premier echoed Qian that China still lags behind in many key sectors. "We have to be diligent," Wen said. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (L) shakes hands with He Zehui, a renowned Chinese physicist during his visit to He's home in Beijing, capital of China, on Aug. 2, 2008. Madame He, now 94, received Wen at her simple home in Beijing's Zhongguancun -- "China's Silicon Valley".     He, one of the oldest woman nuclear physicists in China, had collaborated with her husband to discover ternary fission and quarternary fission in the uranous nucleus.     Wen has been an old friend of the couple. When the husband was alive, Wen often visited their home. Once, Qian was invited to Zhongnanhai, the office compound of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, in central Beijing, to acknowledge Wen of the latest development of the country's nuclear industry.     Wen talked with He about her daily life and health. The premier also recalled the night when he went to say farewell to the body of Qian.     Wen praised He for her simple life style and outstanding contribution to the nation. BEIJING, May 11 -- China's monetary authorities are struggling to address conflicting policy goals, but inflation will remain the top policy concern, the country's central bank governor said on Saturday.     While the United States and other countries are more focused on fending off a recession, China's monetary policy must target inflation over growth and employment, Zhou Xiaochuan, the People's Bank of China governor, told a forum in Lujiazui, Shanghai's financial center.     "There is no cure-all medicine, and we have to make the final decisions -- everyone hopes there would be a cure-all solution, but there is not," said Zhou.     China's consumer price inflation would likely to rise to 8.5 percent in April from 8.3 percent in March, two sources familiar with the data said late on Thursday. The data, which is subject to last-minute revisions, will be officially released on Monday. Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People's Bank of China, addresses the Lujiazui Forum 2008 in Shanghai, east China, May 10, 2008.
