BEIJING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- China was strongly opposed to the accusation of the European Union and Austria over its execution of Wo Weihan, a man spying for Taiwan.     "Chinese judicial organs made the verdict and this was completely a matter within the Chinese judicial sovereignty," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.     He made the statement in response to a reporter's questions: The EU and Austria expressed strong dissatisfaction over Wo's execution in their statement. China's action undermined the mutual trust and mutual respect of human rights talks and would lead to severe effects on human rights talks. The U.S. has also expressed concerns over Wo's case.     Qin said: "The trial procedure was just and fair and the rights of the accused were well protected."     "China is a rule-of-law country and Wo is a Chinese citizen," Qin said, "the evidence of his crime has been verified."     "The accusation against the Chinese judicial authorities intervened brutally into Chinese judicial sovereignty, trampled the spirit of the rule of law, and undermine the basis of the healthy development of the bilateral talks on human rights."     "We were strongly dissatisfied with and opposed to (the accusation) and urged all concerned parties to immediately correct the mistake and stop the words and actions concerning interventions of other country's judicature," Qin added.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao recently made a site tour in Ansai County, Shaanxi Province, to publicize a campaign for the Scientific Concept of Development.     It's an ideology with the same principles of the previous Party leaders' theories known as Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the Important Thought of "Three Represents". The theories all say the CPC has always represented the most advanced productivity and culture in China, as well as the most fundamental interests of the majority of the Chinese people.     During his tour, which took place October 29-31, Hu explained the Scientific Concept of Development which was adopted at the Third Plenary Session of the Seventeenth CPC Central Committee.     While talking with villagers in Hougoumen, Ansai County, Hu said the new policies, based on a practice of the Scientific Concept of Development, will bring substantial benefits to farmers by allowing them to lease their rights to contract cultivated land and forests. Undated photo shows General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Hu Jintao (R), who is also Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, chats with a villager during his visit to Hougoumen Village of Yanhewan Town in Ansai County of Yan'an City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province. Leaders of the CPC have visited nine places in the country to find out how well the Party members, officials and common citizens were learning and implementing Scientific Outlook on Development. It is considered an important guiding principle for China's economic and social development.    In the past, villagers were not allowed to lease their rights and as a result, their land was left unattended when they went to cities as transient workers.     "I believe that with the good policies of the Party and the hard efforts by the villagers, you will lead a better life in the future," said Hu, who is also the general secretary of the CPC and chairman of the Central Military Commission.     This is his second visit to Hougoumen Village. On the eve of the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year in 2006, Hu spent the festival night with villagers, having meals and joining in festive activities including a traditional dance.     Ansai, a county subordinate to Yan'an City, is Hu's site for the on-the-spot study of the ideological drive. Yan'an served as the capital for the CPC-led revolutionary base during the 1930s-40s, before the Party took over the power in 1949.     During his stay in Hougoumen this Oct., Hu learned about new progress made by the leadership of the village's Party branch. The villagers have had their income remarkably increased and their living standards much improved, Hu was told.     The village insisted on a Party Member Promise System. All the village cadres and applicants for Party membership are required to make the promise, according to Yang Fengqi, head of the village's Party branch.     Hu called the Party Member Promise System a good way to help Party members and cadres display their exemplary role.     "We must do what we have promised to do by actions," he stressed.     Hu visited a class of the local elementary school and talked with Kang Haifa, a villager whose family spent the 2006 Lunar New Year's eve with the leader at their cave house. Hu encouraged Kang, an agricultural technician, to help villagers with his skills on vegetable planting.     While in Ansai, the leader also visited Longshitou and Fangta villages and a rural hospital in Jianhua Town.     Showing concern for the heath care of rural people, Hu said the recent Third Plenary Session of the 17th CPC Central Committee decided to form a three-level medical network in the countryside. He said a health center will be set up and perfected for each town or township.     During his tour, Hu also visited the county government's complaints reception bureau and talked with officials about rural people's concerns. The officials told him that local villagers mainly cared lawsuits, land confiscation, reclamation of cultivated land to forests and contracting rights for farmland.     In meeting with the leader, local officials and villagers informed Hu of current reform of the managerial rights in the tree-planting sector. Now with the new policy, local people are working diligently to manage the forest while protecting the environment and ecology.     Hu urged local people to plant more trees in Ansai as it is located on the Loess Plateau, which is vulnerable to ecological damage.     At the end of his study trip, the top leader hosted a gathering to hear reports by some local officials who pledged to promote economic development by relying on science and technological progress.     In a key-note speech, Hu called for deepening awareness of the ideological drive, correctly understanding the general demands of the Party Central Committee and further promoting the implementation of the Scientific Concept of Development.

BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- China held a reception here on Friday to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the China-Japan Peace and Friendship Treaty signing, calling on both nations to make joint efforts to further boost bilateral relations.     President Hu Jintao and visiting Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso attended the reception.     Recalling the history of the Sino-Japanese relations, Hu said 30 years ago senior leaders, including late leader Deng Xiaoping and ex-Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda, made a strategic decision to sign the treaty.     He called it an important historic document in bilateral ties since the normalization of relations in 1972.     Hu said the treaty had for the first time nailed down the general direction of bilateral ties featuring peaceful co-existence and long-term friendship. He added it had played an important role in pushing forward the ties in a correct fashion.     Since then, peace, friendship and cooperation remained in the mainstream of the relation despite some twists and turns, he said.     The four political documents signed between the two countries had laid a political foundation for the long term stable development of bilateral ties, Hu said, adding both sides had made hard-won progress in cooperation in various areas.     After the normalization of the ties, the political and economic exchanges between the two nations had developed quickly.     On Oct. 23, 1978, China and Japan exchanged documents of ratification of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship during the visit of the then Chinese Vice Premier Deng to Japan. This had become one of the four important political documents (the other three are the joint statement in 1972, the joint declaration in 1998 and the joint statement in May) for the ties.     Hu thanks all those who had contributed to cementing the China-Japan friendship, adding insightful officials of two countries, including the seven Japan-China friendship institutions, had made great efforts to push forward bilateral friendship, despite the variety of domestic and international situations.     The Sino-Japanese relations were at a new starting point to create history and faced important opportunities for further development.     "We are willing to work with the Japanese side to increase political mutual trust, intensify cooperation and friendly exchanges to advance China-Japan strategic and reciprocal relations," Hu noted.     Aso highlighted the bilateral exchanges and cooperation of the past 30 years, attributing the development of the relation to people who were working hard to push forward the ties.     China and Japan are permanent neighbors, and the relations between the two should be in the nature of indispensable partnership. Aso called on the two countries to continue their dialogue and exchanges at various levels and cement consultation and cooperation in aim to achieve joint development and help to promote the stability and prosperity of Asia and the world.     Aso arrived in China on Thursday evening to attend the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting. It was his first visit since taking office last month.

BEIJING, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's economy is in good shape despite the changing economic environment, and it will maintain stable and relatively fast growth, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) chief Ma Jiantang told Xinhua on Sunday.     "The fundamentals of China's economy remain unchanged despite the changing world economic environment," the new NBS director said. "We should be confident about the country's economic outlook."     The world's fastest economic growth rate, successful commodity price controls, increasing foreign exchange reserves and good employment rates were the factors to support the economic fundamentals, said Ma.     The consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, eased to 4.6 percent in September from the same period last year. It hit a 12-year high of 8.7 percent in February.     The country's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 9.9 percent in the first three quarters, 2.3 percentage points down from the same period last year.     The slowdown was a result of combined effects, including the global financial crisis, the world economic downturn and severe domestic natural disasters, Ma said.     However, he said, "We should be confident about the country's economic outlook." The country had rich resource reserves, great market potential, vigorous enterprises and the government had strong macro-control abilities.     The government had made a series of macro-economic policy adjustments against the changing economic environment, which would guarantee a steady and sound economic development, he said.

BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- They are not common diplomatic tools: several paddles, a few ping pong balls and some table tennis players from China and the United States.     But the fact that nine American table tennis players were invited to Beijing for exhibition games with Chinese players in April 1971 did break the ice between the two nations.     Thirty-eight years after those historic games, players from the two nations lined up for a rematch in the Chinese capital on Wednesday.     First came the 1971 U.S. team's youngest member, Judy Hoarfrost.     "When I first came to China in 1971, I didn't know the significance at first. As we went to China right away after the invitation, so we didn't have chance to really learn until we left China," Hoarfrost told Xinhua while warming up for a match with a veteran Chinese player, Qi Baoxiang.     The invitation from China came during the 31st World Championships in Nagoya, Japan where the Chinese team was competing for the first time in two years.     Just two days later, nine U.S. team members crossed into the Chinese mainland from Hong Kong, becoming the first group of Americans to visit the Chinese mainland since 1949.     "My picture with Premier Zhou Enlai was on the front page of all the newspapers around the world. When I went back, everybody was so interested. I was only 15 years old, but they had all questions for me like I knew something special about China. Just because I had been there," Hoarfrost recalled.     "It (Ping Pong diplomacy) is the first step of the march towards the relations between the two countries. It played a very important role," said U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte at the friendship game, a tribute to three-decade China-U.S. diplomatic ties.     Negroponte was the highest ranking U.S. official to come to China for a series of commemorative events marking the 30th anniversary diplomatic relations.     Although the 51-year-old Hoarfrost lost to Qi by 3 to 11, she said she enjoyed the match. "Ping Pong really can bring people together."     The match not only helped the veterans revive the old memories, but also connected the younger generations between the two nations. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John D. Negroponte (R) poses with former Chinese ping-pong world champion Liang Geliang during the Friendship Ping-pong Match marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the China-U.S. diplomatic relations, at the State General Administration of Sport in Beijing, capital of China, Jan. 7, 2009.     As the representative of the U.S. junior players, Ariel Hsing said she was "very excited to be a Ping Pong diplomat."     After winning the 2nd place Women's Singles at U.S. National Championships last December, the 13-year-old was picked to play in Wednesday's friendship match.     Hsing's fast break play on both sides of the paddle enabled her to beat her Chinese opponent Chen Meng in 15-minute-long match.     "I was just lucky to win. She played very well," Hsing said of Chen, a member of Chinese women team wining the 2008 Asia Juvenile Championship.     "Good job," Deputy Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Guangya told Hsing, a Chinese American born in San Jose, California.     "The rematch helped pass down the old friendship to the younger generation," said Liang Geliang, a top player who played against the U.S. team in Beijing in 1971.     As the finale of Wednesday's match, Liang and Hsing played together against another pair of Qi and Peter Li, the other junior American.     Their two matches went to the wire and ended in a tie, bringing down the house.     Since her first tour in 1971, Hoarfrost has visited China five times, all in the name of Ping Pong diplomacy.     "So many changes in China. People are much better educated now, have much more communications with other countries. People travel out of China and bring back what they learn. People have many more opportunities to learn."     Changes also took place in the China-U.S. relations over the past 30 years. "We now have a very broad and deep relationship in many different walks of lives, politically, socially, economically, and in terms of science and education," said Negroponte.     Looking to the future, Negroponte said there are "many different possibilities" for the U.S.-China relations. "I am sure the next 30 years will be even better."     "I'm very happy to win. I hope I can make it to the 2012 London Olympics," Hsing said with excitement. "I hope to get involved in Ping Pong diplomacy again."

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress(NPC), meets with Pavol Paska, the speaker of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, China, on Nov. 19, 2008    He added, China is willing to explore new approaches to expand cooperation in an aim to optimize the two-way trade structure and increase mutual understanding between the two businesses.     "We should give full play to the two business communities and help them promote bilateral trade relations to a higher level," Wu said.     Paska said that Slovakia attaches great importance to its ties with China and hopes to learn China's successful ways of boosting national development. It also wants to forge cooperation with China in fields such as infrastructure.     He noted that Slovakia, as a new EU member state, is willing to play a role of bridging the EU-China strategic partnership for further development, reiterating that Slovak parliament and government will continue to cohere to the one-China policy.     The two sides also exchanged their views on inter-parliamentary cooperation, agreeing to push forward collaboration among parliamentary special groups and exchanges of the young parliament members in an effort to generate contribution to the new growth of the bilateral relations.     Paska arrived here Monday for a 5-day visit to China as Wu's guest.
